The International Publishing Corporation Ltd was formed in 1963 following the merger of the UK's three leading magazine publishers. George Newnes, Odhams Press and Fleetway Publications all came together to create the International Publishing Corporation, and IPC Magazines were created five years after this happened in 1968. The IPC has a 150year time period.

The types of magazine and target audiences that IPC has been associated with over the years
· Men’s Division; Magazines include Country Life, Horse & Hound, Rugby World and Decanter. The target audience for these types of magazines would vary, because the Country Life magazine would be aimed at men who maybe live in the Country or interests are about the Country, whereas the magazine Rugby World would be aimed at men who are interested in sport, maybe play for a team of their own, and who watch the games.
· Women's division; Magazines include Look, Now, Chat and Woman, and TV entertainment magazines include what’s on TV, TV Times and TV & Satellite Week. The target audience again within the women’s division again would vary as some people are very interested in keeping up-to-date with the celebrities, whereas some women just want to read about what will be on TV in the next week.
· Upmarket women's division; Magazines include Marie Claire and InStyle, Woman&home, Ideal Home, Livingetc and housetohome. The target audience for each magazine is different as some women would by Livingect if they were interested in to keeping their home nice, or maybe if they were a housewife, whereas someone who would by Marie Claire would be interested in fashion and possibly politics.
IPC might be an appropriate publisher for a new music magazine because they already brand various different music magazines and therefore have experience on what kind of genres to base their magazines around knowing which would sell better than others. They would have experience from what to put into a magazine to make it sell, and ideas on what cover lines and models to use on the front.
The sorts of genres in music/ types of magazines they would most likely to publish would be indie/rock. This is because they have a weekly based around this type of music and therefore have full experience on what kind of things sell. They may also sell similar genres such as scream/rock because it is close to the NME genre.
Alternative publishers like Bauer might be appropriate because they sell similar genres of magazines such as heat, closer, kiss and kerrang and Q. The Group is a worldwide media empire offering over 300 magazines. This means that these too publishers have a lot in common with what they sell. For example they both sell music and gossip magazines, and therefore could come together to create more magazines as they have experience of the kind of things that sell and what people want to read. They are also both successful publishers as they sell thousands of magazines weekly, and by coming together they could produce a magazine which is also likely to do very well in the industry with a defined target audience in sight.
